On Saturday, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) seized gold valued at ₹8 crore from a businessman reportedly linked to Dr. Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Dr. Ghosh is currently in CBI custody facing charges related to the rape and murder of a junior doctor at the Kolkata hospital, as well as allegations of financial misconduct.

ED officials apprehended the businessman at his residence in Salt Lake, Kolkata. They are investigating further connections related to Dr. Ghosh, focusing on other potential sources of illicit funds he may have amassed through alleged medical scams.

In addition to this, on Friday, the ED conducted raids at various properties associated with Dr. Ghosh and his close aides, including locations in Kolkata and Howrah. The raids included visits to Ghosh’s residence and those of three associates. Following these operations, Prasun Chatterjee, a close aide and data entry operator at National Medical College, was detained and taken to Ghosh’s property in Canning town.

The CBI, which arrested Dr. Ghosh and three others on September 2, is investigating financial irregularities at the medical college and hospital. The arrested individuals include Ghosh’s security guard, Afsar Ali (44), and hospital vendors Biplav Singha (52) and Suman Hazara (46), who were involved in supplying materials to the hospital.

Dr. Ghosh has been charged under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) by the ED.

In response to the ongoing investigation, nurses and doctors from NRS Medical College and Hospital staged a protest rally to the Raj Bhavan. They have petitioned the Governor to expedite the investigation process. A senior nurse from the hospital expressed frustration, questioning the Governor’s silence and demanding a swift resolution. “We want to know why the CBI is taking so long to arrest all the accused involved in the rape and murder of our colleague, a 31-year-old postgraduate trainee doctor,” she stated.
